If you’ve thought about making an effort to lose excess weight for some time, and perhaps even talked about it, but never taken action… it may be time to look at why. There are several reasons you may be procrastinating getting slim. Most, but not all, are connected to fear.
Fear of Success & Fear of Change
It’s not about suffering, or hunger, or working out for hours each day. It’s about making sensible choices, incorporating them into your lifestyle, and learning how to adequately meet the nutrition needs of your body.
There’s a lot of learning, and some small changes, but it’s not a path of deprivation, so you’d wonder why anyone who is suffering from the many health and social ill effects of excess weight wouldn’t rush to overcome obesity.
However, successfully losing weight initiates big changes in your life. When you lose 40 or 50 pounds, or more, the people around you take notice. In fact, they take notice a lot sooner than that. So few people successfully lose even 20 pounds that their coworkers and friends notice. They see you differently. They admire your success – it’s not common.
When you keep the weight off and begin to be a model for good health, you get more attention. And for some people, that’s a bit uncomfortable, or at least unfamiliar. You may be seen as decisive, as a leader, as a role model – and some people aren’t sure they want to be noticed.
Fear of Relationships
Obesity is an excellent shield to avoid intimate relationships. Perhaps you’ve had some bad experiences, or just prefer to remain single. Being severely overweight makes that simpler. It’s not that the obese don’t get opportunities to become involved with a significant other – of course they do. But typically, not as often as healthy people in the normal body weight range. There are a number of social, cultural, and possibly even instinctual reasons for this, but when you make the decision to lose weight, you will find that usually more opportunities for relationships present themselves.
Fear of Failure
Perhaps you’ve tried to diet before. Over and over – and felt miserable each time, and failed. Or, commonly, ended up even more overweight after each diet attempt. This isn’t unusual, but it does make it more likely that you’ll procrastinate taking action on dropping your weight. Nobody enjoys the frustration or even humiliation of failure.
Lack of Knowledge
One of the reasons people don’t start the weight loss process is simply because they don’t know how. There’s so much information (and misinformation) out there. So many pills, gimmicks, gadgets, weight loss plans, and quick-fix fantasies. If you Google “weight loss” today you’ll find 102 MILLION results – and many conflict with each other.
It’s easy to procrastinate on getting slim if you don’t know who to trust and what to do. Nobody wants to take action on losing weight when they’re not feeling confident – when they’re not sure what choices are smart, effective, or even safe.
Taking Action to Get Healthy
When you’re ready to lose the excess pounds, a good first step is to find a trusted mentor who has a track record of guiding successful weight loss.
