“As an entertainer, I feel like I have a bit of my glamour back and I can get out there and not run out of breath when I’m singing.
Climbing the stairs is so much easier. As a singer, you need to be able to sustain tones. I didn’t have to take a breath as often. I had much more energy in working with my classes. Now, there’s a lot more energy in the classroom because of my physicality.
The way Dr. Katsura has structured this makes it easy to commit and to stay committed long past the time that you’ve reached your goal or surpassed your goal, in my case. Once you change your habits, it’s easy to keep that going.
Dr. Katsura changed my life in the most wonderful way, and I will spread the word as a way to thank you.”
Shari Lynn Didn’t Feel Like Herself and Decided to Join dietMD Hawaii
“I’ve been in Hawaii for about 39 years. My husband and I were actually married at the fern grotto while living in southern California. I won a lot of money on a television game show called Name that Tune and it changed our lives and we moved to Hawaii. I was a professional singer at that time. I continued singing here rather successfully.
I was very fortunate to be able to meet a lot of people like the brothers Casimiro and sing with them at the Monarch Room and then have my own group for 20 years. Then around midlife, I wasn’t having a crisis necessarily, but gigs were a little harder to find and I was contacted by a private school called La Pietra Hawaii School for Girls. The head of school happened to be a fan of mine and she said, “I’d like to speak to you about teaching here”. She says, “I think you’d be a good teacher.” Well, that’s almost 16 years ago and it’s been an incredible gift to me and a great reward.
Now that life is totally a different life than being out and about as an entertainer where you’re up and about moving around at night and really watching your figure because you’re out in the public eye a lot. For me, when I became a teacher, I was more sedentary and I really didn’t pay too much attention. I was very busy learning how to be a teacher and conductor and such. I’m the director of music at La Pietra. I gained a couple of pounds a year, you wouldn’t think anything of it, and just how it happens to all of us who are human. And 14, 15 years later, I looked up in the mirror and I said, “That isn’t who I feel like inside.” Then, I noticed Dr. Katsura’s ads. One day, July 12th last year, I decided to pick up the phone. I just decided to pick up the phone and call. They said “come on in”. I came on in and I just immediately signed up after hearing Dr. Katsura.”
Shari Lynn Felt Like She Had Her Glamour Back
“As an entertainer, I feel like I have a bit of my glamour back and I can get out there and not run out of breath when I’m singing. My students, I think, are a little more attentive to me. Sadly, people do judge books by their covers and I think they looked at me a bit as kind old teacher and I am! But I get more respect in a way.
I believe that confidence comes from how you’re received in the world and I always felt that people still respected me, and they still wanted to hear me sing. They still wanted to see me teach. I didn’t pay a lot of attention to my own self. Maybe a bit of self-esteem in a way was a bit low but it was easy for me to gloss that over because I was very busy. I’m always very busy and there are other things that take my mind off it and again. Something just hit me that day in July and said, “I think you should try this Shari because you should look like you feel.”
I Have More Energy
“Climbing the stairs is so much easier. As a singer, you need to be able to sustain tones. I didn’t have to take a breath as often. I had much more energy in working with my classes. Now, there’s a lot more energy in the classroom because of my physicality.”
Dr. Katsura Is Always Such A Positive Force
“The way Dr. Katsura has structured this makes it easy to commit and to stay committed long past the time that you’ve reached your goal or surpassed your goal, in my case. Once you change your habits, it’s easy to keep that going and he’s always such a positive force, but he’s very laid back and he doesn’t yell at you if you’ve gained a pound. You yell at yourself enough for that. He’s just very kind and he keeps propelling you forward with kindness, saying “It’s okay. You’ll get there. You’ll get there in your own time.” and he’s so right.”
How Shari Lynn Would Like To Thank Dr. Katsura
You changed my life in the most wonderful way and I will spread the word as a way to thank you. So, keep doing what you’re doing.
Shari Lynn Encouraged Her Cousin to Lose Weight and Be Healthy
My husband and my cousin and I are in a home together. We have lived together on and off for probably 30 years. My cousin, for many years, played Santa Claus in the community and no padding necessary. As he got older, he was approaching health issues. He was away on a trip when I started my program with Dr. Katsura last July and one of the motivations for me was if I could do this and he saw that when he came home, I was making this incredible progress so relatively easy and quickly, maybe he would be inspired to do this and maybe his health would improve.
He was very nearly diabetic, he couldn’t go up and down stairs, and his job was a totally sedentary job so he hardly moved very much. I was watching his health slowly diminishing as a result of the weight. You can’t push anybody to do this and I thought if I could lead by example, in addition to helping me, it might help him. It took a few months but he was proud of me and he was shocked and he kept seeing that I really wasn’t having any trouble nibbling on this and that and he would just watch the weight fall off every week and I’d come back and say “I lost another 3 pounds or lost another pound”. He says, “That’s great!” And finally, I think it was about 4 months later, he said, “I’m ready to go”.
So, he’s been with Dr. Katsura now for about 3 months. He’s now falling away from that diabetic line. He’s not having trouble going up and down the stairs. He’s lost a significant amount of weight. His health and his life has improved and we’re all a happier household.
